Add Spotto MCP to Claude Code with an API Key

Overview

Claude Code adds remote MCP servers with one command. If you also use Claude on the web or desktop, add Spotto there separately. See Claude.

Add Spotto

Run this command, replacing YOUR_API_KEY with your Spotto API key:

claude mcp add --transport http --scope user spotto https://mcp-au.spotto.ai/mcp --header "X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY"
  • --scope user makes Spotto available in every project. Leave it out to add Spotto to the current project only.
  • For the US or Europe, swap au for us or eu. For a read-only or write-only tool list, see MCP Endpoint Profiles.

To check that it worked, run claude mcp list, or type /mcp inside Claude Code. Spotto should show as connected. Then ask "What companies do I have access to in Spotto?"

Share it with your team without sharing the key

To share the setup through a repo, add a .mcp.json file at the project root. Claude Code reads the key from an environment variable, so the file is safe to commit:

{
"mcpServers": {
"spotto": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://mcp-au.spotto.ai/mcp",
"headers": {
"X-API-Key": "${SPOTTO_API_KEY}"
}
}
}
}

Each person then sets SPOTTO_API_KEY to their own key before starting Claude Code.

note

Using $SPOTTO_API_KEY in the claude mcp add command doesn't hide the key. Your shell expands it when the command runs, and Claude Code stores the real value. Only ${SPOTTO_API_KEY} written inside .mcp.json is read at startup.

Troubleshooting

Spotto shows as failed in /mcp

  • Check that the header is X-API-Key: apik_..., with the full key.
  • Check that the URL's region matches the region your key was created in.
  • If you used .mcp.json, check that SPOTTO_API_KEY is set in the shell you started Claude Code from. If it isn't, claude mcp list warns that the variable is missing.
